J.R. Griffin

1955 Chicago, Illinois

A native of Chicago, JR Griffin relocated with his family to Phoenix in 1976. He attended Southern Illinois University, Broward College in Florida and Phoenix College. His studies included Fine Art and Business. Griffin’s early work showcased his intuitive sense of color. His love of French impressionist, Van Gogh, established an early commitment to vibrant color, which has never diminished. Griffin was influenced by European abstract expressionists, Gorky, Albers Kandinsky and Hofmann. In the mid-seventies he began experimenting with abstraction using mixed media, assemblage and collage. This freedom forged his signature style, which is evident today. Griffin has led the way for distilled composition that feature inner light and interior strength.

Griffin says of his work, “My compositions represent synthetic landscapes which employ a varied pallet of warm and cool hues together with linear and textural elements. This helps define perceptual depth to imply content. Typically I utilize both figurative and organic remnants to explore the more visceral qualities of my visual statement.”

Griffin’s most recent work displays power and intensity with the economy of a mature craftsman. His paintings and monoprints can be found in corporate and private collections internationally.
